Job summary

Southwest Virginia Community College seeks a Student Success Advisor to work with prospective and current students to identify career pathways in academic and workforce programs, matching interests and skills. This role serves as a resource to assist individuals in overcoming non-academic barriers to complete their educational goals.

The position involves traveling to off-site locations and local high schools, with a one-year probationary period, and is in-person, not remote.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in related field or combination of equivalent education and experience.
• Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others achieve their educational goals.
• Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically and age diverse individuals.
• Strong interpersonal skills to engage, support, and motivate students.
• Excellent customer service, including ability to follow up and follow through.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Proficient with technology including Microsoft Office and Google docs.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Work with a student population reflecting diverse backgrounds.
• Provide resources, identify needs, and create success plans for underserved populations.
• Proactively help students complete credentials or degrees, maintaining outreach records and connecting to college/community support services.
• Utilize technology solutions in addition to in-person interactions with students.
