Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the 4 Oncology unit in Chapel Hill, NC. The role integrates with an RN partner to support patient care under supervision, focusing on building foundational nursing skills and professional socialization.

The externship runs May 24 to July 31, 2027, offering hands-on experience in direct and indirect patient care, safety reporting, and collaboration in a hospital/clinic setting. Enrollment in an accredited nursing program is required.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Basic computer skills required.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs; frequent standing/walking.
• CPR certification preferred or required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine care activities per plan of care (vital signs, wound care, ADLs).
• Provides direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision.
• Supports learning experiences and assists in exam/procedures as needed.
• Assists in maintaining a safe and clean care environment.
