Job summary

UNC Health is seeking nursing students for a Student Nurse Extern I program in Chapel Hill, NC. The internship runs May 24 through July 31, 2027, with a 36-hour workweek and onsite duties under RN supervision.

Pay is $18 per hour, and the role provides hands-on patient care experience and exposure to diverse clinical settings. Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program, hold a High School diploma or GED, and be listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS with BLS

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with North Carolina DHHS; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in English; ability to organize and prioritize patient care; basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs planned care tasks such as vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and catheter care.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living and assists with ambulation.
• Maintains a clean work area, restocks supplies, transports patients and materials, and supports new staff.
• Reinforces teaching to patients and documents understanding; supports providers during exams and procedures.
• In psychiatric settings, supports reality orientation and de-escalation strategies; monitors therapeutic milieu.
