Job summary

UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program for rising senior ADN and BSN nursing students. The extern will work under an RN partner in an acute care setting, gaining hands-on clinical experience on 5 East—an Oncology unit—while developing foundational nursing skills.

The program emphasizes patient care, teamwork, and professional socialization in a hospital environment, with on-site schedules May 24 to July 31.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in the delivery of patient care.
• Basic computer skills are required.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs; frequent standing/walking; CPR may be required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Performs care/treatments as outlined in the plan of care (vital signs, measurements, simple wound care, etc.).
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living and supports patients and families.
• Maintains clean and stocked work areas, transports patients and supplies, and assists in orientation of new staff and students.
• Reinforces routine patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Assists providers with examinations and procedures and procures equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aids patients and manages therapeutic milieu.
