Job summary

UNC Health’s healthcare team is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the May 24–July 31, 2027 period at the UNC Medical Center Endocrinology Clinic in Chapel Hill. The extern will work under an RN partner, learning nursing skills within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of externship.
• Nursing Assistant I listed and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in English (verbal and written) required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine patient care tasks per plan of care, including vital signs, wound care, and ROM exercises.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Maintains clean work area, restocks supplies, and supports unit operations.
• Reinforces patient education and documents understanding.
• Aids providers with routine exams and procedures; procures equipment during emergencies.
• Supports psychiatric patients with orientation, therapy, de-escalation, and milieu monitoring.
