The Media Equipment Office Student Worker plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the Communication and Media Department by managing the check-in and check-out of production equipment, maintaining accurate inventory records, assisting students and faculty with equipment needs, and ensuring equipment is organized, functional, and ready for instructional and production use.
This position is ideal for students who are dependable, organized, customer-service oriented, and interested in media production, filmmaking, or broadcasting.
Equipment Checkout & Return
- Check media equipment in and out using department procedures.
- Verify borrower eligibility and reservations before releasing equipment.
- Explain proper equipment handling and department policies to borrowers.
- Inspect equipment upon return for completeness, cleanliness, and damage.
- Report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Ensure all accessories (batteries, cables, chargers, memory cards, lenses, etc.) are returned.
Customer Service & Professionalism
- Maintain a professional and welcoming office environment.
- Provide courteous assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
- Answer questions regarding equipment availability and checkout procedures.
- Help users locate reserved equipment.
- Assist with basic equipment orientation when appropriate.
Inventory Management
- Maintain accurate inventory records and asset tracking.
- Conduct routine inventory counts and audits.
- Label, organize, and store equipment in designated locations.
- Assist with annual inventory audit.
Equipment Maintenance
- Charge batteries and prepare equipment for future reservations.
- Clean cameras, lenses, tripods, lighting equipment, microphones, and accessories following department guidelines.
- Test equipment functionality before returning it to circulation.
- Prepare equipment for repair or maintenance when necessary.
Office Operations
- Answer phones, emails, and office inquiries.
- Maintain organized workspaces and storage rooms.
- Monitor office cleanliness and organization.
Production Support (as assigned)
- Assist with setup and breakdown of classroom or production equipment.
- Prepare equipment kits for classes and special events.
- Assist faculty during equipment demonstrations.
- Help transport equipment to classrooms or campus locations.
- Support department events and productions as needed.
Additional Responsibilities
- Follow all department safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and departmental information.
- Report policy violations or equipment misuse.
- Complete additional duties assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications
- Current Lamar University student enrolled as a Communication and Media major as well as in good academic standing.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Dependable with excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cameras, video production, photography, broadcasting, or audio equipment.
- Previous customer service experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move equipment throughout the workday.
- Ability to work in storage areas and equipment rooms.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to safely handle delicate electronic equipment.
Work Schedule
- Part-time student position.
- Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Additional hours may be available during department events such as but not limited to Senior Reception, Creative Conversations, Collaborative Conversations, Comm Unity, and Networking Night.
