Job summary

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. The Staff Software Engineer on the Compute Platform team will own the routing layer that connects every service to customers, built on CNCF technologies including Istio, Envoy, and Kubernetes to improve scalability, reliability, and performance of application traffic.

You'll collaborate with Security, Reliability, and Observability to ensure platform requirements are met, and shape the developer experience with AI-driven tooling to boost

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering and infrastructure experience.
• 5+ years with routing technologies including reverse proxies, ingress controllers, CDN/WAF, and service mesh.
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or Java with production-grade infra services.
• Experience scaling backend infra on AWS with networking, compute, and containers.
• Deep familiarity with the CNCF stack: Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio.
• Proven ability to diagnose distributed systems issues and drive resolution.
• Ability to use AI tooling to improve workflows with human oversight.

Responsibilities

• Own the design, development, and automation of routing infrastructure that directs application traffic to Kubernetes backends at scale.
• Build capabilities on top of Envoy-based reverse proxies, Istio gateways, Ambient mesh, and SPIFFE service authentication.
• Drive measurable improvements to latency, reliability, and performance of application routing systems.
• Shape the paved-road developer experience for operating applications, with emphasis on AI-driven tooling, processes, and support.
• Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams to meet cross-cutting platform requirements.
