Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Compute Platform to own routing infrastructure across its Kubernetes-backed services. You will design, build, and automate routing capabilities to improve performance and reliability at scale, leveraging Envoy, Istio, and companion CNCF technologies.

The role emphasizes AI-driven tooling to enhance developer velocity and operational efficiency. You will collaborate with Security and Observability teams and contribute to platform-wide

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering and infrastructure roles.
• 5+ years of hands-on engineering with routing technologies (reverse proxies, ingress controllers, CDN/WAF, service mesh).
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or Java with production-grade infra services.
• Experience scaling backend infra on AWS; knowledge of networking, compute, and container orchestration.
• Deep familiarity with CNCF ecosystem (Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio) and contributions to production systems.
• Experience diagnosing complex distributed systems issues and driving resolutions.

Responsibilities

• Own design, development, and automation of routing infrastructure for Kubernetes backends at scale.
• Build capabilities on Envoy-based proxies, Istio gateways, Ambient mesh, and SPIFFE auth.
• Improve latency, reliability, and performance of routing across Coinbase production.
• Shape paved-road developer experience for operating apps, with AI-driven tooling and processes.
• Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability to meet platform-wide requirements.
