Job summary

Merck & Co. seeks a Principal Scientist to lead CFD and physics-based simulations for bioreactor scale-up in DSCS Digital Technologies. You will define equivalence between development and manufacturing scales, design scale-down models, and extend modeling to other unit operations.

You will mentor team members, shape the modeling roadmap, and ensure robust validation against experimental data, enabling informed manufacturing decisions across the portfolio.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. with at least 6 years industrial/pharmaceutical experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead CFD and engineering simulation of bioreactor mixing and gas transfer.
• Design scale-down models to replicate manufacturing-scale environments.
• Extend modeling to harvest and TFF to assess shear risk.
• Own end-to-end modeling project execution and validation.
• Support vessel/site characterization and scale-up strategies.
• Mentor junior scientists in transport phenomena and CFD.
• Shape roadmaps and standardize simulation workflows.
• Support broader technology transfer and scale-up needs.
