Job summary

Merck & Co. seeks a Principal Scientist to lead CFD and engineering simulation for bioreactor scale-up in the Digital Insights team of DSCS.

You will apply first-principles modeling and physics-based simulations to inform scale decisions across development to manufacturing scales in biologics and downstream operations. You will mentor scientists, design scale-down models, and drive standards for simulation workflows while collaborating with process development and analytical teams to ensure

Qualifications

PhD/MS/BS with relevant industrial/pharma experience.
Strong background in transport phenomena and gas–liquid mass transfer.
Hands-on CFD in stirred-tank and gas–liquid systems.
Experience validating simulations with experimental data.
Ability to mentor others and lead modeling projects.

Responsibilities

Lead CFD and engineering simulation of bioreactor mixing and gassing to define scale equivalence.
Design scale-down models reproducing manufacturing-scale hydrodynamics.
Extend modeling to harvest and downstream operations to assess risk to product quality.
Own end-to-end project execution: framing, meshing, solver setup, validation.
Support site characterization studies and scale-up strategies.
Mentor junior scientists and shape modeling roadmap.
Establish standards for simulation workflows and HPC usage.
Collaborate cross-functionally to inform scale decisions.
