Jobtailor is seeking a Materials Engineer to support spaceflight systems, focusing on metallic and non-metallic hardware, material selection, and design integration.

Qualifications

  • Minimum B.S. degree or higher in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymer engineering, welding engineering, geology/geosciences and mining engineering, or related field
  • Degree earned within the last year
  • Ability to start by Fall 2027
  • Broad experience with metallic materials such as super alloys, aluminum, and titanium and associated processing, including forging, casting, forming, brazing, and welding
  • Broad experience with non-metallic hardware such as O-rings, seals, and lubricants
  • Experience with material characterization and failure modes, including corrosion, failure investigation, and thermal degradation
  • Ability to break down complex problems into traceable tasks and concisely communicate project status
  • Relevant internship/co-op and/or hands-on experience demonstrating technical skills and leadership qualities
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen a culture of inclusion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs
  • Flexible and adaptable mindset
  • Self-driven with ability to seek out requirements with minimal direction
  • U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, or lawful admission to the U.S. as a refugee or asylee
  • Required Blue’s Standard Background Check
  • MS in a related field is desired
  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties, including fatigue, fracture, creep, and stress rupture, is desired
  • Familiarity with friction stir welding, spin forming, mining and geophysical exploration, metallurgy, casting and forging, or metallic additive manufacturing is desired

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to address material challenges in spaceflight systems
  • Review production drawings for large, complex assemblies to ensure optimal material selection and process implementation
  • Develop, document, and optimize manufacturing processes for metallic and non-metallic hardware
  • Select materials and define design requirements to meet engineering, structural, and program goals
  • Collaborate with quality, design, structures, thermal, integration, and manufacturing teams to optimize system design and performance
  • Match with an appropriate engineering team based on skillset, experience, and business needs
