Job summary

State of Tennessee in Newport, TN seeks an entry-level Eligibility Determination trainee to learn to assess SNAP and TANF eligibility. You will interview customers, collect income/expense data, and document case activity using state systems under supervision.

Successful candidates will complete a mandatory training period, after which further responsibilities and potential reclassification to Eligibility Counselor 2 will follow based on performance and training outcomes.

Qualifications

• Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree.
• Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full-time professional eligibility determination experience and/or a combination of para-professional experience as an Eligibility Assistant or a State contractor serving in this capacity for the Department of Human Services may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Two years of full-time para-professional experience as an Eligibility Assistant or a State contractor serving in this capacity for the Department of Human Services.

Responsibilities

• Learn to manage a workload of initial and ongoing eligibility determinations for SNAP and TANF.
• Learn to interview customers by phone or in person to determine eligibility.
• Learn to calculate monthly income and expenses for budgeting and document case activity.
• Learn to review data from customers and systems to ensure entitlements.
• Assist customers with the application process and schedule appointments.
• Explain program policy and ongoing responsibilities to customers.
• Help identify benefits and services and make referrals as appropriate.
