Job summary

Fuss & O’Neill, Inc. in Hartford, CT, seeks an experienced wastewater engineer to manage full lifecycle projects, lead design evaluations, and mentor junior staff in a hybrid work setting.

The role emphasizes municipal treatment systems, capital project delivery, and client relations. The candidate will oversee process optimization across BNR, MBR, SBR, and other treatment technologies, while coordinating budgets, reports, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 8+ years of experience in wastewater treatment design and process engineering.
• Strong expertise in municipal wastewater treatment and nutrient removal.
• Proven experience managing projects, delivering on time and within budget.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD required.
• Experience with process modeling tools such as BioWin or GPS-X a plus.
• Experience with funding programs (SRF, USDA Rural Development) a plus.
• Ability to travel approximately 5-10% throughout New England

Responsibilities

• Manage the full lifecycle of wastewater treatment projects, including new facilities, expansions, and upgrades.
• Lead process evaluation and design for primary, secondary, and tertiary systems, including biological nutrient removal (BNR)
• Evaluate and optimize treatment processes such as activated sludge, MBR, SBR, trickling filters, and advanced systems
• Oversee process modeling, mass balance analyses, and capacity evaluations
• Develop solutions for biosolids treatment, including digestion and dewatering
• Manage project budgets, schedules, resources, and deliverables
• Prepare and present technical reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates
• Support permitting and regulatory compliance
• Provide construction-phase services, including submittal review, RFIs, field inspections, and startup/commissioning
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
• Build and maintain strong client relationships while supporting business development efforts
