Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in the United States (California) seeks a Senior Transmission Engineer to lead complex transmission line designs from concept through design completion. You will oversee technical staff, prepare specifications and RFQs, and ensure compliance with NESC, GO 95, and industry standards.

You will analyze conductor selection, grounding, and impedance, and communicate with clients and vendors. Travel is required; strong leadership and project-management skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Requires ABET-accredited civil engineering degree with 7 years in transmission engineering (EPC preferred).
• Alternative: ABET-accredited civil engineering tech with FE and 7 years in transmission engineering (EPC preferred).
• Or Master’s in engineering with 6 years in transmission engineering (EPC preferred).
• Expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and tools for transmission design.
• Strong CAD and analysis software skills; attention to detail and problem solving.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to lead large projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead design oversight of complex transmission line projects from concept to design completion.
• Prepare specifications, data sheets, RFQs, and technical bid summaries.
• Lead economic conductor selection studies, lightning performance and grounding calculations.
• Ensure NESC, GO 95, and NERC/FERC compliance and interface with stakeholders.
• Review vendor drawings, coordinate with suppliers, clients, and other disciplines.
• Manage project schedules, scope, budget, staffing, and change orders.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to transmission engineering staff.
• Perform QA/QC of engineering drawings and field inspections.
• Develop and present technical reports; contribute to sales and proposals.
• Travel as required (≈20% listed).
