Job summary

Caribou Thunder is seeking a Principal Systems Safety Engineer in Colorado Springs, onsite. You will apply MIL-STD-882E to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and drive safety requirements across hardware, software, and procedures for defense programs.

The role requires a DoD Secret clearance, up to 10% travel, and full-time onsite work on a 9/80 schedule. Collaboration with IPTs and leadership is essential to ensure safety throughout the lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering or related STEM; 5 years of related experience, or Masters 3 years, or PhD 1 year.
• Active DoD Secret clearance required at time of application.
• Experience applying MIL-STD-882E system safety processes to hazards.
• Familiarity with MIL-STD-1472H, AFMAN guidance, and safety compliance requirements.
• Experience developing and maintaining HTS documentation.
• Experience developing SSPP, SAR, Software Safety Analyses, Hazard Analyses.
• Understanding of systems engineering lifecycle processes (requirements, architecture, software, integration, verification, validation).
• Experience developing safety requirements and engineering documentation.
• Strong communication with IPTs, leadership, customers, and stakeholders.
• MS Office proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive system safety analyses across the lifecycle.
• Identify hazards and develop risk mitigation strategies per standards.
• Apply MIL-STD-882E processes to analyze hazards and drive safety requirements.
• Develop and maintain SSPPs, SARs, Software Safety Analyses, Hazard Analyses.
• Maintain Hazard Tracking System (HTS) records through lifecycle.
• Participate in design reviews, technical interchange meetings, and peer reviews.
• Collaborate with systems, software, hardware teams and program leadership.
• Conduct operational safety audits and continuous improvement activities.
• Support accident investigations and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure safety requirements are traceable across verification and validation.
• Travel up to 10% for meetings and reviews.
