Job summary

Raytheon is seeking a Principal System Safety Engineer to lead MIL-STD-882E program safety activities in a complex defense environment. The role covers requirements interpretation, safety strategy, and budget management across a full lifecycle, from design through disposal.

Responsibilities include mentoring engineers, coordinating safety boards with government customers, and ensuring safety compliance across all program phases. A DoD clearance is required or obtainable.

Qualifications

• Must have a STEM degree and 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E system safety tasks and analyses.
• Experience writing technical reports and presentations.
• Experience briefing safety status to safety approval authority at technical reviews and safety boards.
• Experience managing or owning a safety program.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification tasks.
• Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership.
• Create and manage safety strategies, integrate tasks into the Program IMS, and ensure contract compliance.
• Oversee safety budgets and execution, including EVM and coordination with CAMs, IPTLs, and product owners.
• Provide mentorship to early-career safety engineers.
• Proactively engage in design change boards to assess safety impacts.
• Coordinate and lead System Safety Working Groups with internal and external stakeholders including government customers.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks and implement controls.
• Conduct safety analyses of designs, hardware, drawings, and system requirements to ensure fault tolerance and safety compliance.
• Address safety-related interactions with suppliers and subcontractors.
• Manage safety considerations across all lifecycle phases.
