Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Substation Physical Design Engineer III to lead technical design of high-voltage substations and mentor junior engineers. You will apply codes and client standards, develop layouts, conduct critical calculations, and prepare procurement specifications to support project execution.

You will collaborate with clients and cross-functional teams, ensuring safety, quality, and reliability across projects while contributing to grid modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 4–7 years of Substation physical design engineering experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations using applicable codes and client standards.
• Design ground grids and lightning protection plans.
• Perform AC/DC load, bus span, and ampacity calculations.
• Create equipment specs and design cost estimates.
• Develop conceptual designs and facility layouts.
• Prepare documentation for procurement, construction, and operations.
• Coordinate with teams, clients, vendors, and contractors; participate in client meetings and site visits.
• Ensure QA/QC and oversight of calculations, drawings, and specs.
