Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to lead high-voltage substations' physical design from concept through construction, mentoring junior engineers and ensuring safety, quality, and reliability.

The role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the United States, with a preference for hybrid schedules near listed office locations. Ideal candidates have 10+ years in substation design, an ABET-accredited degree, and strong communication with clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 10+ years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team with clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of power utility substations including general arrangement, equipment/layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, BOM, and AC/DC power systems.
• Design ground grids, lightning protection, and grounding plans using industry-standard software.
• Perform AC/DC load, bus span, and ampacity calculations.
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement and develop design scope and cost estimates.
• Develop conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies.
• Coordinate with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure project success and resolve technical issues.
• Lead client meetings and site visits to collect data and present engineering solutions.
• Oversee QA/QC processes and technical reviews of engineering design packages.
• Provide mentorship and oversight to junior engineers and designers.
