Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Substation Physical Design Engineer III to serve as a technical SME for high‑voltage substations, guiding designs from concept to construction. You will develop code-compliant solutions, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with clients and cross‑functional teams to ensure safe, reliable power delivery.

The role offers remote or hybrid work with regional office support and opportunities to influence the electric grid’s future while advancing your technical and leadership

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited institution.
• 4–7 years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Strong MS Office skills and documentation practices.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations following codes and client standards.
• Prepare general arrangement, equipment layouts, cable trenching, grounding, and MC details.
• Develop ground grids and lightning protection plans per codes.
• Perform load, bus-span, and ampacity calculations.
• Create procurement-ready equipment specifications and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams and clients to ensure project success.
• Support procurement, construction, and operations with design data and documentation.
• Mentor and review work produced by junior engineers and drafters.
