Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Principal Substation Physical Design Engineer to lead the design of high-voltage substations, mentor junior engineers, and drive technical excellence from concept through construction. You will develop code-compliant engineering solutions and work closely with clients and cross-functional teams to ensure safety, reliability, and quality across complex projects.

This role may be performed remotely from within the United States, with preferred hybrid arrangements near listed

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• 15+ years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Professional Engineering (P.E.) License.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards.
• Design ground grids based on applicable codes using industry software.
• Design lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Complete calculations such as AC and DC load, bus spans, and ampacity calculations.
• Create equipment and material specifications and develop design scope and cost estimates.
• Complete conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies.
• Prepare documentation to assist procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors for project execution.
• Lead client meetings and site visits to collect data and present solutions.
• Lead QA/QC processes and provide technical oversight of design packages.
• Mentor and review work of junior engineers and designers.
