Job summary

Ampirical Solutions LLC is seeking a Substation Engineering Supervisor in Covington, LA to lead relay protection and control design for transmission and distribution substations.

You will supervise staff, prepare scopes of work, conduct power system studies, and review drawings. Travel to client sites and excellent communication are required; ABET-accredited degree and 8+ years of experience are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited university.
• 8+ years of substation design experience in the electric utility industry.
• Engineering supervision or project management experience preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Ability to travel to client sites and attend technical conferences.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, mentor, and train engineering staff in relay protection and control design and substation layout.
• Identify and implement protection schemes for transmission and distribution substations.
• Select protection devices and ensure proper sizing and specification.
• Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and conceptual designs for substation projects.
• Create and review drawings: wiring diagrams, schematics, protection panels, and one-/three-line diagrams.
• Conduct power system studies: short-circuit, relay coordination, CT performance, relay loadability.
• Utilize ASPEN, ETAP, and AcSELerator to develop protection settings.
• Perform load calculations for panels and substation components.
• Support field personnel during construction and pre-inspection of turnkey projects.
• Deliver designs meeting industry and client standards; oversee BOMs and layouts.
• Interface with clients and vendors for alignment and technical accuracy.
• Provide technical guidance on relay settings schemes for various topologies.
• Perform quality control and peer reviews of settings and fault analysis.
