Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to work remotely in the United States, with potential for full remote anywhere in the country. The role centers on high-voltage substation design (34.5kV–500kV) and mentoring junior staff within a leading energy infrastructure firm.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant substation or general electrical T&D designing experience.
• Expertise in AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Thorough knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and Design Guide for Rural Substations.
• Ability to review and coordinate vendor submittals.
• Knowledge of substation phase spacing and electrical clearance requirements.
• Develop and review construction documents (layouts, elevations, grounding, etc.).
• Create control enclosure layout, cable tray layout, and conduit drawings.
• Knowledge of substation voltages (MV, HV, EHV).
• Develop and design substation duct bank.
• Interpret engineering calculations and apply design requirements.
• Apply project schedules to complete tasks on time and within budget.
• Knowledge of substation structures and equipment.
• Experience with substation construction/commissioning techniques and standards.
• Write routine reports and correspondence.
• Sketch single line diagrams and related documents.

Responsibilities

• Design and execution of high-voltage substation projects in the 34.5kV - 500kV range with emphasis on safety, cost, quality and reliability.
• Generate designs and detailed engineering deliverables under supervision of lead engineer.
• Detail physical aspects of the design such as general arrangement, elevation, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Perform basic engineering calculations related to deliverables.
• Follow supervisor instructions for complex design assignments requiring standard principles.
• Use CAD tools to create drawings and deliverables.
• Compute standards for manufacturing, construction, and installation.
• Inspect installations to ensure conformance with design and safety standards.
• Oversee project production to meet schedule and budget.
• Prepare and study technical drawings and specs of electrical systems.
• Travel to job sites for data gathering; return with field notes for design.
• Travel to job sites for job assessment and data gathering as needed. Return to the office with sufficient field notes to complete project design.
