Job summary

Baker Tilly is seeking a State & Local Income Tax Senior Associate to join its SALT practice across the U.S. You will prepare and review state and local returns, assist with consulting, and help clients navigate multi-state tax obligations.

You will work with firm leadership, mentor junior staff, and contribute to business development while delivering high-quality tax services for mid-market and Fortune 500 clients.

Qualifications

• 4-year degree
• CPA, Law License/JD or CMI eligible
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, business or related field
• 3 years professional experience
• Minimum 3 years of public accounting or industry with multi-state income/franchise tax
• Strong time management, communication, analytical thinking and client service
• Ability to manage complex projects, mentor junior staff and collaborate across teams
• Credential may include CPA, Bar, enrolled agent or IPT
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; tax software experience a plus

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review state and local income and franchise tax returns for corporations, partnerships and other entities across multiple jurisdictions.
• Assist clients with tax consulting issues, incl. state income/franchise, sales taxes, mergers & acquisitions, nexus considerations and filing positions.
• Conduct technical research on complex state income tax laws and regulations, including changes in legislation and case law.
• Analyze client data to identify filing obligations, potential tax exposures and planning opportunities.
• Support clients in state tax audits, notices and controversy matters.
• Maintain strong internal relationships across service lines and engagement teams.
• Develop technical expertise in state tax and communicate insights to clients and internal teams.
• Manage multiple client projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment, ensuring accuracy and quality.
• Participate in mentoring, coaching and learning initiatives to support ongoing development.
• Contribute to business development and relationship-building efforts internally and externally.
