Job summary

Atoms is hiring in San Francisco for a Senior Safety Engineer to own the safety case end to end, author the record, and defend arguments with evidence across our real systems. This role requires deep expertise in functional safety, autonomy behavior, and fleet operations.

You will write structured safety arguments, manage hazard analyses, and ensure provenance and traceability throughout development while collaborating with validation, fleet ops, and software teams.

Qualifications

• Written, structured safety arguments (GSN or equivalent) on real systems.
• Hazard analysis ownership (HARA, FMEA, FTA or equivalent) demonstrated.
• Scenario-based validation ownership with traceable evidence.
• Proven provenance discipline: distinguish measurement vs estimate vs placeholder.
• Ability to challenge and improve arguments with clear readiness criteria.

Responsibilities

• Own a defined scope of the safety case end to end, from first draft to signed.
• Define scope, exclusions, and hazards that cannot arise within the bounds.
• Judge evidence sufficiency with experience and documented sources.
• Write the claim-argument-evidence map for clear hold points.
• Convene reviews and capture reviewer comments to resolution.
• Be a demanding user of shared methods and tooling for safety cases.
• Use AI tools to draft templates, stress-test hazards, and trace evidence.
