Job summary

Atoms is hiring a Senior Safety Engineer to own end-to-end safety cases for automated systems in our San Francisco operations. You will craft CAE/GSN arguments, defend safety claims with rigorous evidence, and lead formal reviews with cross-functional teams.

Expect deep engagement with fleet operations and AI-assisted safety workflows. You will drive hazard analyses (HARA, FMEA, FTA), ensure data provenance, and enforce ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, SAE J3016 compliance while mentoring

Qualifications

• 9+ years of cross-functional experience spanning functional safety, autonomous behavior, and fleet operations.
• Proven author of record for a structured safety argument (GSN/CAE) on a production system.
• Dual ownership of hazard analysis and validation with scenario-based validation strategies.
• Rigorous data provenance: label and challenge measurements before they gain authority.

Responsibilities

• Own a defined scope of the safety case end-to-end, from drafting through sign-off and governance.
• Architect boundaries and constraints, defining conditions, assumptions, exclusions, and hazards.
• Evaluate evidence sufficiency and data provenance, partnering with Safety and Validation leads to synthesize evidence.
• Construct CAE structure with clear boundaries: when safety claims hold or not.
• Lead formal safety reviews and peer governance, ensure evidence maturity before reviews.
• Drive rigor in methodologies and tooling, close gaps to prevent unsafe workarounds.
• Pioneer AI-assisted safety workflows using templates, hazard sets, and scenario coverage.
