Job summary

Atoms in San Francisco is seeking a seasoned Safety Engineer to own the safety case end-to-end for complex production systems. You will defend claims, define boundaries, and ensure evidence coverage across functional safety, autonomous behavior, and fleet operations.

You will lead formal safety reviews, drive rigorous governance, and advance AI-assisted safety workflows while collaborating with cross-functional teams to raise safety standards and accelerate responsible deployment.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of cross-functional experience spanning functional safety, autonomous behavior, and fleet operations.
• Author of record for a structured safety argument (GSN or CAE) on a production system.
• Dual ownership of hazard analysis and validation with methods like HARA, FMEA, FTA.
• Strong data provenance and evidence judgment.
• Ability to enforce safety gates under commercial pressure with clear risk communication.
• Familiar with ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, SAE J3016.
• Fluent in Python for data analysis and tooling.
• Excellent technical writing for safety documents.
• Collaborative leadership and flexible teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Own the safety case end-to-end, defending claims and maintaining governance as scope evolves.
• Define operational conditions, valid assumptions, exclusions, and non-credible hazards.
• Evaluate evidence sufficiency and data provenance with stakeholders across teams.
• Construct the CAE structure with precise validity boundaries.
• Lead formal safety reviews and peer governance, driving resolution of reviewer feedback.
• Drive rigorous shared methodologies and tooling to prevent local workarounds.
• Pioneer AI-assisted safety engineering workflows and traceability.
