Job summary

Thomson Reuters Foundation seeks a Senior Software Engineer II to lead high-impact backend projects powering our AI document processing platform. You’ll design scalable Rust services, occasionally work in C#/.NET, and guide architecture across Core and Apps to improve throughput and reliability.

You’ll own requirements from product teams, push for safe API evolution, and mentor engineers while participating in on-call rotations and incident responses across multi-region deployments in Azure.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software development experience building and operating backend services in production in Rust or C++.
• Experience leading complex projects across teams, including architecture for multi-region or highly available systems.
• Experience designing features with privacy and compliance requirements in mind, and building those requirements into code.
• Deep distributed-systems expertise: message queues and at-least-once delivery, idempotency, backpressure, retries and timeouts, failure detection, and autoscaling.
• Experience choosing between storage options for a given workload.
• Performance work at scale: profiling, benchmarking, memory budgets, concurrency limits, and handling inputs that don’t fit in memory.
• A track record of written design work (design docs, ADRs or RFCs) that compared options and drove a decision.
• Excellent software development fundamentals: testing strategy across unit, integration and load, security-conscious defaults, and incremental delivery through CI/CD.
• Experience mentoring other engineers, and strong code-review and technical-writing skills.
• Hands-on experience with agentic development tools and prompts.
• Ownership mindset: follow work into production, lead root-cause analysis, and fix what you find.
• Willingness to join on-call rotation and to work in C#/.NET if needed.

Responsibilities

• Turn asks into requirements from product owners and consuming teams, and propose improvements.
• Design with explicit trade-offs; write design docs and ADRs with options considered and rationale.
• Define the architecture; shape how services are designed, deployed, and run on Azure.
• Find and fix bottlenecks using production metrics, profiling, and load tests.
• Build and run the processing pipeline end to end; handle large inputs with autoscaling and throttling.
• Work across Core and Apps; occasionally support customer-facing services in C#/.NET.
• Evolve contracts safely; keep changes additive and backward compatible with rollout plans.
• Keep a strong engineering mindset; deliver in small, reviewable steps and test at appropriate layers.
• Write specs and plans that guide coding agents and verify with tests.
• Own production incidents; instrument services and participate in on-call and postmortems.
• Lead high-impact work; break projects into deliverable pieces and maintain vision.
• Raise the team’s bar; mentor engineers and set coding/design review standards.
