Job summary

Electric Power Systems is seeking a Sr. Relay Technician to serve as technical lead for protection and control systems, guiding advanced testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and project execution on substation and industrial facilities across North America.

Role requires deep expertise in protection schemes, strong project leadership, and customer interaction while ensuring safe, reliable operation of power systems. Travel to job sites and mentoring junior staff are expected.

Qualifications

Hands-on experience installing, maintaining, testing & repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations.
Ability to troubleshoot protection and control circuits across diverse systems.
Willingness to travel and overtime as required.

Responsibilities

Lead job site safety briefings and enforce safety policies to minimize risk.
Analyze protection schemes for power circuits including transmission, distribution, and industrial systems.
Install, commission, test, and perform functional testing of substation control circuits on relay panels and equipment.
Execute end-to-end testing using automated relay test equipment and software.
Read and validate protection schematics, logic diagrams, and system configurations.
Ensure calibration and performance of electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays.
Lead root cause analysis investigations for relay trips and disturbances.
Develop project execution plans, commissioning procedures, and energization sequences.
Coordinate resources, schedules, and field activities to ensure project success.
Prepare comprehensive reports with test results, relay settings verification, and performance.
Ensure as-built drawings and documentation meet customer and industry standards.
Mentor Relay Technician I/II and junior engineers in protection practices.
Interface with customers, utilities, and stakeholders to communicate status and resolve issues.
