Job summary

Markel Group is seeking an experienced Property Underwriter to join our Alpharetta-based team. The role focuses on underwriting new business and renewals in a profitable way and involves handling larger, more complex accounts within the wholesale channel.

You will utilize underwriting tools, understand state laws, and collaborate with agents and brokers to maintain profitability. The position includes mentoring less experienced underwriters and supporting team objectives.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of complex Property underwriting expertise in wholesale channel with surplus lines experience.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility.
• Demonstrated marketing and relationship building skills.
• Four-year college degree and/or CPCU or similar designation preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Microsoft Office skills to include MS Word and MS Excel.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills.
• Must be a team player in a flexible, fast-paced environment.
• Up to 25% travel.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline Property risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
• Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
• Manage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations.
• Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on accounts and producers.
• Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
• Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while monitoring profitability and production.
• Review forms and pricing of competitors and market the Markel product effectively.
• Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting staff.
