Job summary

Markel seeks a Director/ Sr. Director Underwriter in the U.S. to lead regional underwriting strategy, drive growth, and ensure quality work products across primary and excess property lines. You will coach teams, liaison with brokers, and coordinate with cross-functional leaders to deliver optimal solutions.

The role requires deep industry knowledge, strong pricing judgment, and travel ~25%. US work authorization is required; hybrid work arrangments are supported in selected locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred; CPCU designation preferred.
• Approximately 15 years of property underwriting experience.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring underwriters and staff.
• Strong technical judgment in risk selection, pricing and underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead property underwriters and underwriting support staff, balancing workloads and staffing needs.
• Build and maintain a professional, accountable, collaborative team culture.
• Coach and develop associates in underwriting, marketing, broker management, and relationship skills.
• Monitor unit performance and underwriting quality through audits.
• Build relationships with wholesale brokers and customers.
• Coordinate with Actuarial, Product Leadership, Claims and IT to deliver solutions.
