Job summary

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer to lead the US refinery safety program and to support policy development beyond the US. You will mentor engineers, manage risk-training development, and uphold critical safety standards across the organization.

The role requires extensive experience in process safety, HAZOP/LOPA, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on implementing Cenovus risk methodologies and ensuring rigorous safety practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
• 16+ years in Process Safety or related field.
• 10+ years in Oil & Gas/Petrochemicals.
• Experience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs.
• Experience with PHAST software.
• Familiarity with API, NFPA, CCPS codes and US regulations.
• Ability to translate HAZOP/LOPA results into SIL requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead Process Safety across US Refineries—methodology development and regulatory interpretation.
• Develop Process Safety Engineers trained in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID).
• Design and maintain a comprehensive risk-training suite for site personnel.
• Champion key risk standards (PHA, RMP) and drive audits in PSM space.
• Coordinate third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis).
