Job summary

Serco seeks a Senior Electrical Engineer to design marine electrical systems for naval and commercial ships at our Arlington, VA location. You will lead concept-to-construction efforts, produce critical electrical drawings, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver compliant, high-quality solutions.

The role requires 10+ years in marine electrical design, DoD Secret clearance eligibility, a relevant engineering degree, and strong skills in MATLAB/Simulink, PLCs, and MS Office.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Marine Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of experience in design of marine electrical systems with a professional engineering firm, shipyard, or marine electrical contractor.
• Broad knowledge of electrical engineering design principles.
• Strong working knowledge of MS Office 2010, MATLAB, Simulink, Simulink Coder (Real-Time Workshop), and PLC programming.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, codes and standards (46 CFR; ABS; SOLAS; IEEE Std. 45; IMO; IEC; NEC).
• Experience writing requirements and drafting SOW and Technical Instruction.
• Ability to review and develop project work, quantities, costs, accuracy of specifications, and constructability.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel ~10%.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and specification of marine electrical systems from concept through detailed design and construction (LV/HV power, switchboards, transformers, UPS, propulsion electricals, automation and monitoring).
• Produce and review electrical design docs: single-line diagrams, schematics, load analyses, cable schedules, equipment specs and requisitions.
• Provide project cost and schedule estimates.
• Ensure compliance with marine/offshore standards and class rules (IEC, IEEE, DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s).
• Support project execution through FAT, SAT, commissioning and sea trials.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
• Collaborate with mechanical, naval architecture and software teams.
• Interface with clients, shipyards, vendors and classification societies.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks across the lifecycle.
• Travel occasionally for ship checks and Design Reviews.
• Prioritize Health, Safety and Environmental considerations; comply with QA and security procedures.
