Job summary

American Family Insurance in Las Vegas seeks an attorney to supervise outside counsel handling complex litigation for the corporation and insureds. You will perform initial coverage reviews, draft Reservation of Rights letters, and provide legal advice to business partners.

You will report to the Senior Manager, Legal. This role requires a Juris Doctor, bar admission, strong litigation experience, solid knowledge of professional responsibility, tort and insurance law, plus proven outside counsel

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service.
• Demonstrated experience preparing civil pleadings, motions and discovery and deposing witnesses.
• Demonstrated litigation experience.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of rules of Professional Responsibility for the jurisdiction in which they practice.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of tort, contract, and insurance law.
• Admitted to the state bar in the state where they are located or (1) admission to the bar within one year of hire for individuals who must pass a bar exam or portions of a bar exam to be admitted or (2) bar admission as soon as practicable but no later than 60 days of hire for individuals with diploma privilege or who are eligible for in-house counsel registration.

Responsibilities

• Proactively manage outside counsel.
• Hold outside counsel accountable for meeting company requirements.
• Implement strategy to drive files toward successful resolution.
• Develop defense strategy for the life cycle of the file, including initial analysis and execution of the strategy.
• Adhere to litigation best practices, including motion practice and trial preparations.
• Timely escalation and reporting on files as required.
• Collaborate with management and attorney teams to review file handling, reserving practices, risk management, and performance.
• Present files to senior leadership.
• Manage the file cycle, including timely closing.
• Implement reserving practices, including early recognition of reserve deficiencies and timely adjustments.
• Draft and integrate coverage analysis and engage Coverage partners as appropriate when coverage issues arise.
