Job summary

First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) is seeking a Senior Mainframe Engineer to lead z/OS upgrade programs and drive standardization across large-scale mainframe environments. You will guide teams, design repeatable upgrade processes, and push for efficiency and scalability in complex systems.

The role emphasizes mentoring, documentation, and adoption of automation to improve reliability, performance, and delivery timelines.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience as a Mainframe Senior Systems Engineer.
• Proven experience with z/OS upgrades, mass maintenance, and software installation.
• Deep knowledge of z/OS components: JES2, HCD/IODF, SMP/E, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, ASM, GRS, SDSF, TSO, RACF.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical leader, guiding best practices and mentoring team members on z/OS upgrade optimization.
• Design and implement standardized approaches for z/OS upgrades and mass maintenance to ensure repeatable, high-quality outcomes.
• Lead efforts to optimize system performance, streamline processes, and reduce operational complexity.
• Oversee installation, configuration, and maintenance of IBM and ISV software products, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute operating system upgrades with minimal business impact.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation and templates for operating system rollouts.
• Drive adoption of new technologies and capabilities (e.g., Sysplex enhancements, automation frameworks) to support strategic objectives.
• Act as SME for mainframe infrastructure projects, providing technical direction and governance.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting and resolution for escalated incidents beyond Level 1 support.
• Participate in after-hours and weekend support as required.
