Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a part-time Lifeguard to supervise pool areas, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies. The role requires current lifeguard certification, ongoing training, and the ability to lead other guards while maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for members.

You will perform pool maintenance, record-keeping, and assist with audits and drills as part of a dedicated aquatics team. Flexible scheduling may be required to cover shifts.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18 years.
• Minimum of one year of Lifeguard experience.
• Demonstrate Lifeguard skills per YMCA policies.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard and obtain YMCA Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire.
• HSI certifications for BLS (includes AED), First Aid and Emergency Oxygen before first shift.
• Lifeguard Supervisor certification before first shift.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe swimming conditions during shift and ensure lifeguards meet essential functions.
• Enforce safety rules and testing procedures for pools and aquatics areas.
• Perform pool/deck area maintenance to high safety and cleanliness standards.
• Conduct pool chemical testing and keep accurate records.
• Perform daily equipment checks and ensure availability of needed equipment.
• Monitor hazards and prevent accidents before they occur.
• Maintain required certifications per YMCA standards and procedures.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings (min 4 hours/month).
• Provide vigilant surveillance and respond to victim rescues within 20 seconds.
• Interact with members and staff using firm, fair, and tactful communication.
• Assist Aquatics Director with audits and drills.
• Provide leadership for other lifeguards on duty.
