Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a Lifeguard Lead to ensure safe swimming conditions and a positive, engaging atmosphere for members and youth. You will supervise lifeguards, enforce rules, perform pool maintenance and testing, and coordinate with the Aquatics Director to uphold YMCA standards.

You will also help with aquatics audits and training, maintain certifications, and ensure rapid, effective rescues while promoting a safe, inclusive environment for all participants.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Minimum of one year of Lifeguard experience.
• Current Lifeguard certification (YMCA or Red Cross) and certification within 30 days of hire or first available class.
• Must obtain additional certifications (HSI: BLS for AED, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen) before first shift.
• Lifeguard Supervisor certification prior to first shift.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Responsibilities

• Know and follow all emergency procedures and respond immediately.
• Enforce safety rules and testing procedures across pools and aquatics areas.
• Maintain pool areas for safety and cleanliness (vacuuming, deck tiles, trash pickup).
• Perform pool chemical testing and record-keeping per YMCA/state regulations.
• Conduct daily equipment checks and ensure availability of necessary tools.
• Monitor hazards and prevent accidents; maintain vigilant pool surveillance.
• Provide leadership and guidance to other lifeguards on duty.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
