Guardian Life is seeking an Underwriting Large Case Specialist to adjudicate the most complex life underwriting cases and guide peers on modern underwriting technologies. This remote role reports to the Head of Underwriting Risk Management and emphasizes mortality protection, regulatory compliance, and customer-centric decisions.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 15-20 years of experience in individual life underwriting.
• Proven track record handling large and complex cases for high-net-worth applicants.
• Specialized depth and breadth of expertise in individual life underwriting.
• Experience with reinsurance frameworks and treaty language interpretation.
• Expertise reviewing complex financial statements and tax returns.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies (EHR, GenAI, wearables) and behavioral economics concepts.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the large-case underwriting and financial specialist, adjudicating the most complex/high-value cases and reviewing appeals and reinsurance submissions.
• Provide expert judgment on escalated cases and troubleshoot complex issues for all staff levels.
• Communicate with field partners and home office to gather information, negotiate appeals, and convey decisions professionally.
• Build partnerships with distribution leaders to ensure alignment and service excellence.
• Apply deep reinsurance expertise to ensure appropriate use of automatic and facultative reinsurance and coordinate with underwriters.
• Mentor underwriters in advanced financial underwriting and stay updated on regulatory requirements.
