Guardian Life is seeking an Underwriting Large Case Specialist to serve as a senior technical expert in Life Underwriting for Financial Protection and Retirement Solutions. You will adjudicate the most complex cases, guide peers, and apply advanced underwriting technologies while aligning with company values.

The ideal candidate has 15–20 years in life underwriting, strong reinsurance and financial statement review skills, and proficiency with emerging technologies.

Qualifications

• 15–20 years of experience in individual life underwriting.
• Proven track record handling large and complex cases for high-net-worth applicants.
• Industry education such as FALU or FLMI is required.
• Expertise in individual life underwriting including complex, high-dollar cases.
• Experience with reinsurance frameworks, treaty language, and collaborating with reinsurers.
• Experience reviewing complex financial statements and tax returns.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies (EHR, GenAI, wearables) and behavioral economics concepts.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills; able to adapt and innovate.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence peers and leaders.

Responsibilities

• Adjudicate the most complex, high-value cases within underwriting guidelines and mortality expectations.
• Provide expert judgment on escalated cases and guide staff and management.
• Communicate with field partners and home office to gather information, resolve issues, and convey decisions professionally.
• Build and strengthen partnerships with distribution leaders, agencies, and field partners.
• Apply deep reinsurance knowledge to ensure proper use of automatic and facultative reinsurance and collaborate with reinsurers.
• Act as a trusted underwriting partner to Distribution and Field leadership to drive case placement and a seamless experience for producers and customers.
• Maintain deep knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment methods, and regulatory requirements.
• Champion adoption of modern underwriting tools and platforms and integrate them into workflows.
• Mentor and train underwriters in advanced financial underwriting.
• Monitor industry trends to inform prudent business decisions.
