Job summary

Sammons Financial Group is seeking an experienced Sr. Java Developer to help modernize a mission‑critical insurance administration platform. You will design, implement, and mentor within a joint team migrating from COBOL/VSAM mainframe to Java-based systems.

You will contribute to architecture decisions, guide modernization initiatives, and collaborate with business partners to deliver scalable, reliable software in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• College Degree in computer science, information science, MIS preferred.
• Minimum 8 years IT development experience or equivalent preferred.
• Effective verbal and written communications skills and the ability to communicate with business partners and other IT staff.
• Problem solving skills sufficient to perform research and propose a solution.
• Able to work on multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Able to direct and coordinate the work of other team members without HR management responsibility.
• Knowledge of programming languages as required for the system.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality applications that support critical business processes.
• Identify and propose strategies around technical problems affecting business; communicate standards and gain consensus.
• Collaborate with development team, architecture, and business partners to improve software.
• Lead the implementation of complex solutions and refine them based on stakeholder feedback.
• Participate in architecture, design reviews, and decisions for modernization initiatives.
• Solve complex problems to improve customer experience.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices and system capabilities.
