Job summary

The City of Boston seeks a Facilities Manager to support the Boston Fire Department’s Facilities Maintenance Division under the Facilities Director. The role encompasses design, construction, and operation of facilities, with emphasis on contracts, budgets, and project coordination.

Responsibilities include managing in-house and external projects, coordinating moves, and ensuring compliance with standards while minimizing disruption to services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction management, engineering, business administration, or a related field, plus three years of contract administration and facility management experience.
• Strong understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, data, plumbing, fire protection, envelopes, roofs).
• Two+ years in a Management/Leadership role.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Massachusetts driver’s license required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

• Develops and administers facility design, construction, maintenance contracts and monitors compliance with specifications, timelines and policies.
• Maintains files and budgets; provides data for budget forecasts.
• Diagnoses building system issues and coordinates repairs with staff or contractors.
• Manages in-house projects and coordinates with contractors to minimize disruption.
• Coordinates capital construction efforts with City staff and external partners.
• Liaises with departments and service providers to plan moves with minimal service disruption.
• Reviews standards and updates guidelines for department practices.
• Acts as liaison between end users and contractors on projects and repairs.
• Conducts research on products and methods and prepares informational materials.
• Meets with contractors, consultants, vendors, and inspectors on BFD sites to share knowledge.
