Job summary

The State of South Carolina, Department of Corrections, seeks a security supervisor in Columbia to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff, overseeing custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum security units.

You will ensure safety across buildings and property, perform routine unit inspections, assist with inmate counts, and investigate complaints while advancing OSHA standards and veteran staff development.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• Three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
