Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Supervisory Security Officer to oversee security staff assigned to housing units and to supervise inmate custody and control.

Under general supervision, you will conduct inspections, investigations, counts, and prepares reports, while counseling staff, conducting evaluations and ensuring compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Training Academy and successfully complete the Basic Supervisory Course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Supervise subordinate security assigned to housing units.
• Oversee custody and control of inmates in housing units.
• Perform routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and staff.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise job performance, conduct and appearance; prepare evaluations.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, and train subordinate staff to required standards of performance.
• Prepare reports as needed.
