Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervisory security professional to plan, coordinate and direct the actions of security staff and oversee custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum units.

Under general supervision, you will ensure the security of all buildings and public property, perform routine unit checks, assist with inmate counts and investigate complaints, while arbitrating disputes between inmates and staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.
• Three years of experience in correctional/security/military/police work; one year of supervisory experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Must successfully complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and direct the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Make routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
