Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a Security Supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct security staff and oversee custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum units. A high school diploma with relevant experience is required; a related bachelor’s degree may substitute.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and three years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
