Job summary

State of South Carolina's Department of Corrections seeks a security supervisor to plan and direct security staff in a medium/maximum security facility, overseeing custody and control of inmates.

Under general supervision, you will coordinate building security, conduct routine unit counts, investigate complaints, and arbitrate disputes while ensuring OSHA standards are met. A high school diploma with several years in correctional work and required certification is expected.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in CSU of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Education
