Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a security supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct the actions of the security staff, overseeing inmate custody in medium/maximum security facilities.

Responsibilities include ensuring security for buildings, performing safety checks per OSHA standards, assisting with inmate counts, and arbitrating disputes. Must complete SCDC Basic Training and meet SC minimum qualification requirements including possible degree substitutions.

Qualifications

• Must complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• High school diploma and relevant experience required; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• Three years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, with one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s).
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Performs routine checks of the units to ensure staff perform duties safely and OSHA standards are met.
• Assists with inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
