Job summary

Syms Strategic Group, LLC is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (Production Support) for a 100% U.S.-based remote role supporting VA systems. The position requires 8+ years in systems engineering, with strong cloud, Linux/Windows, and automation expertise, plus security compliance and on-call availability.

Ideal candidates have hands-on experience with AWS/Azure, S3, CloudWatch, IaC like CloudFormation, and CI/CD pipelines. A Bachelor's in CS/IT/SE is preferred, and U.S. citizenship is required.

Qualifications

• Experience with AWS and/or Azure Cloud, notably S3, Step Functions, Batch Jobs, CloudWatch.
• Proven track record of managing and maintaining large-scale production systems.
• Strong proficiency in Linux/Unix and Windows OS.
• Experience with system administration tasks including user management, permissions, and monitoring.
• Scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
• Experience with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack.
• Knowledge of IaC tools such as CloudFormation.
• Experience with monitoring tools including CloudWatch, DynaTrace, Science Logic.
• Troubleshooting and optimizing system performance and reliability.
• Networking concepts, firewall configurations, VPN setup; network monitoring tools.
• Security best practices for production systems; audits and compliance.
• Familiarity with databases: AWS RDS SQL Server, Oracle RDMBS/RDS; backup/recovery.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines; Git and CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy.
• Strong communication and teamwork; ability to work in cross-functional teams; on-call readiness.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-level, day-to-day operational support for cloud-based systems.
• Develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
• Document problems and resolutions in logging and discrepancy tools.
• Collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams on day-to-day activities.
• Respond to user calls and escalate issues as needed.
• Maintain computing infrastructure and assets inventory.
• Ensure compliance with VA standards and security policies.
• Support continuous improvement through IT process enhancements.
• Contribute to documentation, training, and procedures.
