Job summary

Markel in Chicago is seeking a Senior Claims Examiners Manager to lead a team handling a broad range of general liability claims. The role reports to the Senior Director of General Liability and drives achievement of strategic objectives.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree (JD or technical degree a plus), a claims adjuster license, and at least 10 years of claims handling/management experience. Strong communication and analytical skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• JD or advanced degree is a plus.
• Claims adjuster license required or eligible.

Responsibilities

• Confirms coverage by reviewing policies and documents.
• Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity.
• Review and approve correspondence and reports including coverage position letters and Large Loss Reports.
• Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of the authority of the handling examiner.
• Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to Senior Director or Senior Management.
• Participate in review and discussion of loss activity in the general liability book with interested stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial, Executive Management).
• Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal performance objectives.
• Assess and evaluate individual examiners and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs.
• Prepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing information.
• Assist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses and assess resource needs.
• Foster and encourage strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including Underwriting and Actuarial.
• Promote and enhance strong relationships with internal and external customers and partners.
• Participate in special projects as requested.
• Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required
