Job summary

Markel Group seeks a seasoned leader to manage a team of Claims Examiners handling a wide variety of general liability claims. The role reports to the Senior Director of General Liability claims and drives performance, accuracy, and customer service.

Responsibilities include reviewing coverage, directing loss activity, approving reserves and large reports, mentoring staff, and coordinating with Underwriting and Actuarial teams. A JD or advanced degree is a plus, with a valid claims license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims.
• Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity for claims.
• Review and approve correspondence and reports including coverage position letters and Large Loss Reports.
• Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of the authority of the handling examiner.
• Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to Senior Director or Senior Management.
• Participate in review and discussion of loss activity with stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial, Exec Management).
• Ensure adherence to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal objectives.
• Assess examiner and team performance; provide feedback and training needs.
• Prepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing information.
• Assist in budgets, expenses evaluation and resource planning.
• Foster relationships with internal stakeholders and external customers/partners.
• Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required.
