Job summary

Markel Group is seeking a senior claims leader in Richmond to manage a team of Claims Examiners handling general liability claims. The role reports to the Senior Director and focuses on meeting objectives, guiding staff, and aligning with company goals.

The position requires a strong background in claims handling, licenses, and leadership, with collaboration across Underwriting and Actuarial functions, ensuring Fair Claims Practices and budget oversight.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
• JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus.

Responsibilities

• Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims
• Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity for claims
• Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of the authority of the handling examiner
• Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to Senior Director or Senior Management
• Participate in review and discussion of loss activity in the general liability book with stakeholders
• Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal performance objectives
• Assess and evaluate individual examiners and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs
• Prepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing information
• Assist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses and resource needs
• Foster relationships with internal stakeholders, including Underwriting and Actuarial
• Promote relationships with internal and external customers and partners
• Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required
